James D. Bornhoft is a seasoned trial attorney with a robust background in high-stakes litigation, having tried over 70 jury trials and spent more than 10,000 hours in the courtroom. Before founding his own firm, Bornhoft Law, James served as a Deputy District Attorney in Colorado’s most populous judicial district, where he was appointed the sole Human Trafficking Prosecutor and a member of the elite Special Victims Unit.

During his tenure at the District Attorney’s Office, James prosecuted complex felonies including homicide, human trafficking, child exploitation, and organized crime under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA). He collaborated closely with national and federal agencies such as the FBI, HSI, DEA, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, and was a featured presenter on Human Trafficking at the Colorado Detectives Academy.

In County Court, James was promoted to lead a team of 12 prosecutors across six courtrooms, managing a combined caseload of over 3,500 cases. He personally trained junior attorneys in trial advocacy, motions practice, evidence presentation, and jury selection—skills he continues to bring to every matter he handles.

Now serving as Of Counsel to Mile High Legal, James extends his litigation and strategic experience to Colorado clients in matters of criminal defense, personal injury, and complex family law. His reputation for thorough preparation, client-centered communication, and tenacious advocacy has earned him widespread recognition, including multiple Best Attorney honors and selection to the Arkansas Legal Elite and AY Magazine’s Best Lawyers across four distinct practice areas: Criminal Defense, Family Law, Personal Injury, and Trusts & Estates.

In addition to his Colorado credentials, James is also licensed to practice in Arkansas, where he founded and leads Bornhoft Law. He represents clients in matters ranging from serious personal injury to high-conflict custody disputes and contested probate litigation.

James holds a J.D. from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, where he was a member of the nationally ranked DU Law National Trial Team, and a B.S.B.A. in Financial Management and Investments from the University of Arkansas.
