About Eric Hutchens

Eric Hutchens is an experienced criminal defense, immigration, family law, and personal injury attorney with more than a decade of courtroom and litigation experience. His background as a former prosecutor, federal immigration attorney, and current municipal court judge gives him a comprehensive understanding of how cases are charged, litigated, and decided—insight he now uses to advocate effectively for his clients.

Eric began his legal career as a Deputy District Attorney in Colorado’s 17th Judicial District (Adams County), where he prosecuted all levels of traffic, misdemeanor, and felony cases. During his five years as a prosecutor, he handled thousands of cases and conducted more than 50 felony and misdemeanor jury trials. This experience provided him with extensive trial skills and a deep understanding of evidentiary issues, charging decisions, and courtroom strategy.

Following his work as a prosecutor, Eric joined the United States Department of Homeland Security as an Assistant Chief Counsel with the Office of the Principal Legal Advisor in Denver. He litigated civil immigration proceedings in the Denver and Aurora Immigration Courts, working on removal issues, asylum, adjustment of status, visas, immigration bond and detention, and appeals to the Board of Immigration Appeals. He also served as the Lead of the Human Rights Violators Team for Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and Utah, handling complex and high-stakes immigration enforcement matters. His federal experience provides valuable insight into immigration court procedures and government litigation strategy.

Eric currently serves as an Associate Judge for the City of Sheridan Municipal Court and the City of Idaho Springs Municipal Court.

Earlier in his career, Eric clerked for the Honorable Chief Judge Maria E. Berkenkotter of the 20th Judicial District, where he worked on civil, domestic relations, and criminal matters and gained firsthand insight into judicial decision-making and courtroom practice.

In his free time, Eric enjoys skiing, fly-fishing, playing in his band, and spending time with his family.
